NIKKI'S FIRST CHRISTMAS
Nikki was born November 29, 2001 at 1:15pm. He was 7 pounds, 12 ounces. The first thing i noticed about him was that his head was so well-rounded for a normally delivered baby. He looked tiny to me but very cute and very cuddly. Two weeks after that, we brought him to the pediatrician for his BCG shot. Noticing that Nikki was sallow (there was a yellowish tone to his skin), the pedia suggested some lab tests done. After several more tests and lots of worries, he was admitted in the hospital December 18, 2001 because his hemoglobin count was too low. He needed a transfusion. As a first time mother, I could not believe my little boy had to go through something like this so early in his life. It was scary, depressing and sad. Not only that, but he had to be given prophylactic antibiotics intravenously and so, we had to stay in the hospital until December 26. Spend Christmas in the hospital? No way, I said. But did i have a choice? Nikki needed those shots. My poor little boy. His first Christmas spent in a dreary hospital. But it was not so bad. We decided to postpone Christmas for Nikki. So, the moment Nikki was discharged from the hospital, we got packed and ready and the next day (December 27), we flew to Zamboanga and my mom and dad, sister and brother were there waiting for Christmas to arrive. Actually, they waited for Nikki to arrive so we could finally celebrate Christmas together. Christmas in 2001 was December 27 for all of us. They did not celebrate noche buena, nor did they open the presents. Christmas came with Nikki. After all, i would do anything for my little boy even move Christmas to December 27 to make his 1st Christmas perfect for him.
