CYNTHIA HEIMEL SAID...

When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap.

SUSHI

Here's another photo of Sushi. She usually doesn't like to have her photo taken but well, she doesn't have much of a choice. Anyway, I decided to put her in her basket in the evenings because in the mornings, she loves to jump all over us while we're still asleep and it makes the boys cranky. She doesn't like to stay in her basket because I think she thoroughly enjoyed her several weeks of free access to the room but well, she doesn't have much of a choice either. Nevertheless, Sushi is still a happy bunny and is still spoiled.

TGIF

My brother is coming home from Cebu! My mom texted me the other day and she told me that he'll be arriving today. But, he and his officemates will be heading for Boracay tomorrow until Sunday! Wow! I am so jealous! Haven't been to Boracay yet and I've been asking Ruther if he wanted to vacay there. He's still undecided but he did tell me that he needs a vacation. I told him that we need to plan the destination because I will have to save up for it. Anyway, Boracay might not be too farfetched yet...

.....

Russell, my brother-in-law and I spent the afternoon sorting through the stuff in the living room. We disposed of some of the things that were no longer needed and we filled 2 boxes! And that's just in the living room! What more the junk outside! I told Russ we'll have to do that as soon as possible because we'll need room for our things. Anyway, it's been difficult trying to dispose of things because Mama and Papa are trying their best to hold on to every bit of thing they can get their hands on. Sigh. I can't blame them. I tend to be a sentimentalist too and sometimes it gets hard when I can't even decide to throw a plastic bag because it reminds me of the time me, Ruther and the boys went shopping in Japan. Sigh.

.....

Still rains here a lot. It's been raining for the past days. Nothing stormy, just dark skies and occasional rains. I always sleep with a blanket now but I still miss my husband's warmth. Sigh...

END OF AUGUST

Can you actually believe that August is almost over? I'm betting this weekend I'll be hearing Christmas songs on the radio! Wow. Year 2007 is halfway over. Have any of your resolutions come true yet? I can't even remember mine! Hahaha! Anyway when I did check them out (in this post), I realized that I only accomplished 7 out of the 13 I posted! Hmmm. Is that good or bad? I dunno. Anyway, I have yet to do another resolution which is to complete the 9 Misa de Gallo masses in December. Now that I hope to achieve. Anyway, one step at a time, right? I still have several months to do the rest of my resolutions. Hmmm... Good luck to me?

=D

INANG

Here's a photo of Mama, Papa and the boys with Inang. She's the one on the right. Doesn't she look younger than 92? She still looks very sprightly. The boys felt a little too warm there that they took off their sandals! Sigh. At least I have to be glad that they paused long enough for me to take this photo.

OH MY GOD.

Can you actually believe this? Malu Fernandez is back! After reports that she resigned from Manila Standard Today she is now back again! What the -- ?!?! Is this true? Oh my goodness, this is really worrisome. How can people condone her writing? It is very backward, truly selfish (it mostly revolves around her persona) and utterly insensitive. She should get some lessons on proper journalism and writing not to mention a refresher course on values education. I feel she abuses this "freedom of speech" to the hilt. Oh my. And my day turned out so wonderfully only to be ruined by such news. Are you going to let it pass? I hope not!! If you can, let your wrath be known and tell everyone how hateful this woman is. Oh and "divalicious"? In your dreams, honey.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY INANG!

Today is Inang's birthday so we went to Don Galo (a place near where we live). She is 92 years old. She is Ruther's paternal grandmother and the only grandparent alive now. Inang is very remarkable. At her age, she could still walk straight. Of course, she walks slowly but she is still able and quite strong. I suppose the only difficulty she's having is hearing. We usually have to scream near her ear for her to hear us. But her mind is still sharp. She even remembered Nikki's birthday! I heard her telling Mama, "November 29 si Nikki, di ba (right)?" Yup, really remarkable. I do hope that should I reach the age of 90, I would still have a sharp mind. Maybe it also helps that she is surrounded by a loving family. I took photos of her with the boys tonight. I'm not sure if she will still be alive until the boys are much older but I would still want them to see that they met their great-grandmother even if they won't remember it. I am sure they will appreciate that when they are bigger. My paternal grandparents have passed away but my mom's parents are still alive so Nikki and Ethan have 2 more great-grandparents to bond with. Who knows they might all still be here 5 years from now.

Happy Birthday Inang! God bless always!

COTTON CANDY

Ethan loves cotton candy as much as I do. Nikki is not so fond of it. Whenever we pass by a cotton candy stand, you can be sure Ethan is going to ask for a bag. I think it's because they smell so yummy. I love the floss on my tongue and the way they melt and leave my tongue bright pink or shocking blue. I think cotton candy is fun!

NO BIKE

So we didn't find a bike for the boys yet. The bicycles at the mall were disappointingly limited. Nikki tried one and it was a bit small for him because I noticed that his knees were kind of bent too much as he pedaled. That bike cost around P1200 (approximately US$26, which was okay with me). Unfortunately, the bike that was a little bigger than that was a whopping P2600 (US$56)!! That's P1400 difference! So I wasn't too keen on that because in a few months, the bike will be too small for them and I will have to purchase another one (most probably). So I decided to check some of the bike shops nearby and see if there are more affordable kid bikes. Hopefully, by next week the boys will be happily pedalling away in their new bike. The key word there is "hopefully".

.....

I watched the latest Monk episode yesterday. It wasn't as exciting but I still love Tony Shalhoub. He's a really great actor! =D

.....

Although there is reportedly no typhoon in the country right now, it has been raining for the past days. Just the soft rain though, more like a shower. It's actually pleasant because it cools the air wonderfully. I hope that there will be more days like this.

.....

Nikki and I watched the eclipse through the Discovery Channel livestream yesterday. He was so fascinated with it. Every once in a while he would ask me to check the moon's "status". We even watched some clips on why the moon turns red, the cause of the red color and how eclipses happen. He was so amazed. Ruther was also watching the eclipse the same way we did so we were basically watching it "together". It was fun watching the moon as a family (even if Ethan hardly understood what was happening).

REALLY NOW...

I took this photo last Sunday. For those who can't understand Tagalog "banana con yelo" or saging con hielo is a cold treat that is basically slices of banana (saba variety -which is the native banana), some shaved ice, milk and sugar. Sometimes some tapioca is added to increase the texture. Halo-halo is a similar dessert but is made up of more ingredients like sweetened fruits, gelatin cubes, sweet beans, nata de coco, kaong (seeds of sugar palm trees), jalea, and ube (made from purple yam). Anyway, going back to the photo, it says "Banana con yelo P20.00 only. Surpasses even Halo-halo". I really think Filipinos are great advertisers. =D

BAR STOOLS AND FURNISHINGS

I recently posted about the site Furniturefromhome because I wanted to check their bedroom designs and furnishings. Like I mentioned previously, it was a very organized site. I loved the look, the colors, the simplicity, the ease of use and most especially the photos of the rooms and furniture. There were so artistic. Anyway, dropping by the site again, I decided to have a more close-up look at the bedroom furniture and the decorating styles. I personally think that the dark wood bed frames were very dramatic pieces. I just think they would look nice in Ruther's and my bedroom. We have been thinking of getting a platform type, just like the queen dark wood modern contemporary platform bed they featured there. I think it looks amazing. I also checked out the home office furnishings because I told Ruther about the recliners there and he told me to look at them again. Yes, I think he would enjoy having one in our bedroom because he loves to watch tv in comfort (and style). I think the chocolate brown recliner club chair is very masculine and so him. Priced at $769 I suppose that's not too bad for something you plan to use everyday for the rest of your life. Oh and did I mention that there are recliners on sale?? I love the taupe leather recliner media home theater sectional sofa. It looks very posh but I don't think it will last long with 2 rambunctious boys in the house. Well, maybe a darker color will suffice. I also checked out the home office desks and I still think that dark wood will fit our contemporary look. I loved the dark contemporary hardwood home office desk. I think Ruther will love that too since it is very masculine. The black cherry executive home office set looks great too. Since we are having the house renovated, we are planning to put a bar on the first floor. We still don't know exactly where to put it but I suppose it will be near the kitchen area. At furniturefromhome, I saw these really cool bar stools. I don't usually like the bar stools with back rests but when I saw the custom made steel swivel bar stool that had a cute cocktail drink on the back, I really loved it. Browsing through the many designs, I thought, you could have your choice there, from the simplest to the most fancy. All you have to do is choose, which is not very easy I might add. Anyway, for the house, I think the backless swivel steel bar stool or the swivel pub tall dining bar stool will be the best choice. We want things simple yet elegant. Anyway, I think the furnishings in furnitureforhome will suit any home, any style and any picky homemaker. Just get ready to spend an entire day looking through all the things in their site because half a day is just not enough time.

3:35AM

I'm quite excited about tonight's eclipse. I'll try to see if I could watch it with Nikki in the Discovery Channel website. I think it will be another interesting thing for us to talk about and study. I'm already planning the day just to make sure the boys will be awake by that time. From the Discovery Channel:

Live Streaming of Blood Moon Eclipse
What astronomical phenomenon has stopped wars, saved lives and turned the Moon a bloody red?
Eclipses have been occurring for billions of years. These natural spectacles reveal the mysterious working of the solar system.
This August 28th, switch on your TV from 5pm and tune into our 2 hour moon special featuring 95 Worlds and Counting and If We Had No Moon.

.....

As predicted, Nikki keeps on talking about yesterday. He is now saying he wants to go back to Monte Vista, much to the delight of Papa who loves these sort of outings. Well, we'll have to see. Papa's birthday is next month and it might happen, but you never know, a lot of things can come up that would ruin even the best-laid plans.

.....

Ruther gave me the go signal to buy the boys a bicycle so I'm a bit excited about going to the mall tomorrow to check out the bicycles there. I won't be getting the expensive one but I still won't pick the plastic one either. I did a lot of reading on buying bicycles for kids and well I know not to pick a big bike. I'll still get them training wheels and protective gear. I hope it won't rain tomorrow so we could all go to the mall. =D

BLOGSVERTISE

I recently signed up at blogsvertise.com to well, increase my income-generating hobby and I must say I am quite happy that they approved of my blog almost immediately. I chanced upon the site from a blogger friend and thought of checking it out. I liked what I saw so I decided to join. I was pleased to receive an email saying that my blog was approved and I would be receiving assignments and reminders through email. I like that because I always check my email and I can always tell immediately if I have assignments to do. This way, I would not forget. So far, I'm quite happy with the assignments I have been getting. Unlike the other site, I don't have to keep on checking blogsvertise for assignments for fear that someone might grab it ahead of me. So yeah, I'm quite happy. Hopefully, this will be another plus in my weekly earnings.

SWIM FUN

Here are some photos from our family day yesterday.

C'mon! Let's go!

We made it! (L-R: Papa, Ethan, me, Ron and Nikki, Russell)

Ethan loves the water!

Playing chase.

Lunchtime! Everyone was so hungry but the boys, who played in the pool nearby.

"I don't like that, Tito Ron!" Nikki is scared of the huge animal and promptly goes to another pool. (Hahaha!)

EXHAUSTED BUT HAPPY

It's been a long day and it was pretty exhausting. But it was a lot of fun too so I don't mind so much. I didn't think that the boys would have so much fun today. I just thought that they would like the place and be swimming but we really and truly enjoyed our day. And that was a lovely surprise. I hope we have more family trips like this in the future. Again, hopefully, Ruther will be with us then.

.....

I finished reading Two Plus One is Enough the other day. It was such a fun read. Makes me wanna reread the previous books in our collection. Well, no problem. I can always do that later on when I have more time.

.....

Ruther finally got his new phone. He settled for the Samsung brand and well, I find it nice. Not only do we match (my phone is a Samsung too) but he said that he got that because the plan is cheaper as well. I'm actually proud of him for saying that. A few years ago he would have said differently and would probably pick the hottest gadget in the market. So yes, like I said, I'm really proud of him for his self-control. When we said our goodbyes tonight, he said he would tinker a bit with the phone before he sleeps. Which probably means he'll be sleeping late tonight. =D

BED AND BREAKFAST

When I was younger, I always imagined having my own bed and breakfast. I just find it so appealing. Maybe this is because of my nurturing personality. I always believed that bed and breakfasts are more cozy and more intimate than let's say a hotel. Anyway, if you wish to escape to a romantic bed and breakfast with your sweetheart, then what's there to stop you? Maybe it's time you spent some precious moments together. Maybe it's time to rekindle the flame of love. Maybe it's time to just get away from the hustle and bustle. Just take your pick from amongst the top destinations, I'm sure you will find one perfect for you and your sweetie. Or perhaps if you wish to have a get-together with your female friends then why not check the girlfriend getaways? You can even surprise a couple with a gift certificate if you want to present them with a special time together. So for that really cozy, really intimate and special time together, check out these bed and breakfast places.

RAMBUTAN

I took this photo this afternoon. I thought that the fruit would look nice in it's white plastic bag so I just took a peek and got the photo as is. So nice.

THE AFTER-SWIM

We just arrived home a few minutes ago from our trip to Laguna. I must say the boys had a lot of fun at Monte Vista. I have no idea how much the entrance fee was because Ron paid for everyone. I suppose it was his birthday treat for us. We found a big round table for us that was located near 3 different kinds of pools and Nikki was the first in the water. Ethan was a bit cranky because he lacked sleep and it was a bit warm but after a few minutes, I changed him and he was soon laughing and playing with the other kids. Nikki had a lot of fun in his floatie and he and Ethan enjoyed the big slides so much. Of course, Russell and I were their companions. The slides were not at all scary because you had to push your way down. It was not slippery at all! Although thinking about it, I think it was also party because my shorts were not slippery enough because some boys slid down quite easily. I now have (somewhat) sore arms from trying to push Ethan and me down the long slides. But it was still fun. I think one of the floaties was abused too much that it had a hole and Nikki and Ethan had to share the one by late afternoon. Good thing Ethan got sleepy and Nikki had the chance to play until a few minutes before we had to leave. He was fast sleep in the car on the way home. Poor tired little kuya. But it was such a nice day. The kiddie pool was covered so I did not have to worry about the boys getting too dark and there were times when it got cloudy and rained and that was fun. We also tried one of the hotter pools but Nikki and Ethan complained. Haha! I suppose the big slides were the best. Even I had a lot of fun too. Nikki informed his grandparents that he wants to go back to Monte Vista. Well, that will happen most probably next month because it will be Papa's birthday. We'll see. I'm sure Nikki won't stop talking about this. I just have to wake him up first.

BENJAMIN ELIJAH MAYS SAID...

The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It isn't a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream.... It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim is sin.

CHICKS

This is actually a basket of baby chicks. (I know, "baby chicks" is redundant but I still think it's cute to say "baby chicks" instead of just "chicks".) I took this photo at a public market but it came out blurred. When I reviewed the photos, I thought that the colors looked interesting so decided to crop it, and it looked really cool, like an abstract. And now I have another interesting shot. Neat. =D

NO DRUGS

Drug addiction affects people from all walks of life. It starts with a taste and usually develops into a craving then into obsession. It is something that physically, emotionally and psychologically affects a person's well-being, turning a perfectly healthy individual into someone robbed of his mental faculties. Some people stop before things get out of hand. But others have become too dependent on the drug that when they stop taking it, they experience unpleasant physical reactions. Drugs such as opium, cocaine, marijuana and their derivatives have been used as medicines but the improper use of these drugs has led to abuse and addiction. Although breaking the habit is difficult, it can be done and one way is finding a good drug rehabilitation program. 1-800-NODRUGS.com can help these wayward souls and turn them once more into productive and happy individuals. This 24/7 portal is not only designed for drug addicts willing to undergo a rehabilitation program, but it is also for alcoholics, chronic relapse victims, and their families. What's more, one can search for an appropriate rehabilitation program without worries of cost because 1-800-NODRUGS.com is a free and non-profit site. You can call and talk to one of their experienced drug rehab counselors and have them answer all your questions. Calling 1-800-NO-DRUGS is not limited to drug users and their families. If you know someone who needs help, who is suffering from alcoholism or drug addiction you can immediately call or fill out an online assessment form. They will never charge you for the referral. You can also browse through the links for more extensive information like relapse, intervention, contacting a drug rehab counselor and recovery.

Why do people use drugs? Some use it for the thrill it brings, some try it out of curiosity, and others as a coping mechanism for the unpleasantries of life. Despite the many reasons, we cannot judge people for succumbing to this deadly substance. Sometimes, they do not realize that the drug is not the answer to their problems but merely masks them. When the drug is taken away, the problems they ran away from still exist. It is therefore up to us to help them see the folly of their actions and to give them the help they need badly. What matters is taking that first step and 1-800-NODRUGS.com is sure to help every step of the way.

FOUNTAIN

This is a very nice spot. When we came by this area, it was quite shady and the fountain was wonderfully cooling, even if we just sat by it. Ruther took a photo of me sitting beside this, but I had to be careful not to sit on the puddles. Still, it was a really nice sight to see Cinderella sitting there with her animal friends.

The Cinderella Fountain at Tokyo Disneyland.

OUT WITH THE OLD

Ruther is planning to get a new cellphone for himself. Before you think that he's splurging, he's had that phone for several years now and it's about time he got himself a new and modern one. He told me his choices and here they are:

I think I like the Panasonic (white one instead of blue) better than the Samsung (silver instead of black) but Ruther is still undecided. He might drop by the store tomorrow and make the final decision then but I'm sure that whatever he picks will be a good one. He's very nitpicky with his gadgets.
.....
The living room has been painted today (first coating) and it looks so nice. Mama chose a pale yellow color and it really livens up the place. Papa wanted white walls but he was outvoted by everyone who has had enough with white. The "old" house had a lot of white and everyone (except Papa) want something new for a change. I'm quite happy with the yellow color. It's soothing yet cheerful and perfect for a living room. I have yet to see the painting completed because the workers have to put the final coating maybe on Monday.
.....
We're going swimming in Laguna tomorrow. It was Ron's birthday yesterday and Papa suggested celebrating it at a pool. Of course, the boys are so excited. Nikki already wanted to leave today but I told him that the trip will happen tomorrow. I have yet to know the details but so far, all I know is that we're going to Laguna and rent a pool or something. And we're leaving at 8am. I already packed our bag but I'm going to double-check everything later. Don't want to forget something important tomorrow even if it's just going to be a day trip. For sure, I will be posting photos after...

PADDED PANTY

Ever wished you had a more contoured butt? Or how about having a really curvaceous derriere? The answer: padded panty. You can check out the many designs and colors and take your pick. Not only can you select the colors and styles, but you can actually choose the contour and size of your padded panty! How ingenious is that? My favorite is the Happy Ending Padded Girdle. It looks really nice! So now, I think your dreams of having a J Lo butt is no longer farfetched. All it takes is a padded panty with no one the wiser.

Arctic sea ice expected to hit record low

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- The extent of Arctic sea ice will likely have melted to a record low this September partially due to man-made greenhouse gas emissions, researchers at the University of Colorado said on Thursday.

There is a 92 percent chance that Arctic sea ice extent in September will melt to its lowest level at least since the 1970s, when satellite measuring efforts began, the researchers said.

They had predicted a 33 percent chance of a record low in April, but changed the forecast after a rapid disintegration of sea ice during July.

Such high levels of ice melting could have wide implications in coming years such as changes in temperature and rain patterns across much of the United States.

"Similar to the way the El Nino pattern affects weather in the United States, more ice melt could change rain patterns and temperature patterns in the middle of the United States, which could have economic impacts on farmers," Sheldon Drobot, who leads Arctic ice forecasting at CU-Boulder's aerospace engineering department, said in an interview.

It could also open the Northwest Passage along the northern coast of North America and connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to shipping by as early as 2020 or 2025, he said. That could be a cheaper option for many shippers than the Panama Canal.

Whatever the effects, a rise in heat-trapping emissions such as carbon dioxide is partially responsible, the university said.

"There is an element of human activity in the cause of this melt," said Drobot. "Natural variations can't explain everything."

High levels of greenhouse emissions from smokestacks and tailpipes have combined with natural fluctuations, such as an increase in cloud-free days over the Arctic this summer, to spur the melt, he said.

Arctic sea ice researchers pay particular attention to the months of September and March because they generally mark the annual minimum and maximum sea ice extent, respectively.

Sea ice extent, the area of an ocean covered by at least 15 percent ice, has been declining at least since the late 1970s.

The CU-Boulder department used satellite data from the U.S. Department of Defense and temperature records from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for the ice forecasts, which it has been producing for five years.

The record low September minimum for sea ice, set in 2005, is 2.15 million square miles. For 2007, the highest probability minimum extent is 1.96 million square miles, and there is a 25 percent chance the low will fall to 1.88 million square miles, Drobot said.

The melt itself can act as a feedback loop and cause ever more melting, because water has a darker surface than snow. "Water acts like a sponge sucking up a lot more solar energy," Drobot said.

CARL SCHURZ SAID...

Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you will reach your destiny.

SHE DESERVED IT

My goodness! This Malu Fernandez is quite the buzz these days. I chanced upon her infamous article (featured in People Asia magazine) in one of the blogs I frequent. I must admit I was appalled at her atrocious behavior. I so abhor people who are so full of themselves and who act like prima donnas (if you don't believe me, ask Ruther). In her article, she castigated overseas Filipino workers while in a plane ride to Athens. I most especially was horrified when I read in that article that she was in a "private hell" being with these hardworking people. She said more things but I suppose no need adding fuel to the fire. Anyway, I could go on and on but to make the story short, I hated her attitude and so does the rest of the Filipino community. Well, at least those that sent her hate emails anyway and told her off. Well, she really should be ashamed of herself in my opinion. I don't know if she has kids but my goodness! what values are she teaching them with her snobby attitude? Anyway, to blow everything out of proportion, she was featured on TV Patrol tonight!! My gosh! So embarrassing! On national tv! In the news story, I learned that not only did she get hate mail, she also got some death threats! Well, she should have seen that coming. If she wanted to be so high and mighty, then she should expect the troubles that come with being high and mighty. After the article came out and the furor reached its peak, she refused to apologize and said that she was only being true to herself (oh really?!). In a separate article, she was urging people to "use common sense" (or whatever the *ell that means). But when the uproar was just too great she fell down (was pushed down I think) from her hideous pedestal and is now trying to be lowly and humbled (which I don't believe, sorry). Anyway, in the news tonight, she apologized and said she resigned from the Manila Standard (a news daily here) and People Asia magazine. Well, to be honest, she truly deserves it. When I told Ruther about it he also agreed that she was just too much. (He also added that she didn't even look like she had the right to be all prima donna-ish - in other words, she was ugly.) Not only did she diss her fellow Filipinos, she had no right bashing these people we call "modern-day heroes". Well, I hope she really learns her lesson and remembers that being rich or wealthy does not make a person. She is such an embarrassment and I am ashamed to call her a Filipina. She needs an attitude overhaul badly. Shameful.

GREAT BUYS

I went to the mall this afternoon while the boys were napping because my dad asked me to check the prices of the flash disks. I think he needs one for the office. Since the boys were napping, I thought it would be okay to go on my own. Anyway, after checking that out, I decided to pass by National Bookstore before heading home because I needed to buy some masking tape and glue. While there, I decided to look for the Pugad Baboy 19 since Ruther collects that. Fortunately they did not run out of it (much to my relief) and I got a copy for Ruther. While browsing through the aisles, I caught sight of a Baby Blues book. Ruther and I have been collecting the Baby Blues series even before we had kids and we really enjoy the humor of Kirkman and Scott. Checking the titles, I saw one that we did not have yet: Two Plus One is Enough. I quickly got it and was happy that I now have one more to add to our collection. Anyway, after I paid for those I happened to pass by a table full of discounted books and textbooks. I decided to have a look-see and it was a good thing I did because I found some great workbooks for Nikki that were only P20 each!! I got him 4 workbooks in Math, Science and Health, and Music, Arts and Physical Education. I was happy I found those. The Grade 1 books are okay for Nikki right now. We are currently learning the lessons in that level already so I was really glad I chanced upon those books. Really great buys today. Yup, am happy, happy, happy. =D

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN KIDS

I read this article yesterday and I was very much worried about it. I mean, first was the report on obesity and now high blood pressure. This is pretty worrisome. Not only do I have to worry about my sons' upbringing and schooling, I have to worry about their future health which means, I have to guard what they eat carefully. And not only that, I also have to assess the family history which right now, does not seem so peachy with diabetes on the top of the list. Sigh... Well, I suppose it's a good thing I know how to take blood pressure.

.....

Speaking of health, I am still trying to watch what I eat and to lose weight. I'm not after a huge goal. I don't have to go back to my usual size (although it would be great if I could) but if I just stay in the normal range, then I'm happy. My motto: a little at a time rather than no pain, no gain. =D

4PM

I took this photo the other day from the balcony of the house. The sun looks upsidedown, doesn't it?

CAN'T PUT IT OFF ANY LONGER

I finally finished my 5th assignment for the current module. I'm submitting my exam tomorrow, good luck with that. I plan to start the 6th assignment tonight. I don't want to lag behind again. I've just become too lazy. Yup, lazy - plain and simple. Hopefully, I won't be in the next few days. I intend to finish this course by October so I can check my employment options.

.....

Last night, Nikki and I did an activity together. We tie-dyed 2 of their plain house shirts red and Nikki enjoyed the activity a lot. I was so pleased because he usually is very cautious. I let him do the stirring while the shirts were in the dye bath and he was eager to see the results. When we finally rinsed the shirts he loved the tie-dye design. Even Mama was so impressed with the shirts and asked me how we did it. I was just glad that we found another fun - and yet not messy - activity. Photos to follow later on...

ANTON CHEKHOV SAID...

Man has been endowed with reason, with the power to create, so that he can add to what he's been given. But up to now he hasn't been a creator, only a destroyer. Forests keep disappearing, rivers dry up, wild life's become extinct, the climate's ruined and the land grows poorer and uglier every day. [Uncle Vanya, 1897]

MANGOSTEEN

I love eating this fruit. But of course, sweet mangoes are still my favorite. Anyway, these were given by my cousin who went home to Zamboanga to attend our barrio fiesta. August 16 was the Feast of San Roque and that's the name of our baranggay. I always remember inviting our teachers for lunch to our house during our fiesta. Before you say I'm trying to be a teacher's pet, I'm not. My mom was a teacher in my school so she invited her co-teachers.
Anyway, I digress... Mangosteens are yummy. A bit heavy (when you have like a dozen with you) and a bit messy but love the texture. I always eat mangosteen with soy sauce. Don't ask why, I just do. I suppose it's a quirk of mine. I just love the saltiness of the soy sauce mixed with the sweet flavor and texture of the mangosteen. Anyway, hope to eat more of this before it goes out of season.
.....
And while we're at it, a little info from Wikipedia:
The mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical evergreen tree, believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas. The tree grows from 7 to 25 meters tall. The rind (exocarp) of the edible fruit is deep reddish purple when ripe. Botanically an aril, the fragrant edible flesh is sweet and creamy, citrusy with some peach flavor. Often heralded as the "Queen of Fruits"[1], mangosteen is closely related to other edible tropical fruits such as button mangosteen and lemondrop mangosteen.

MOUSE-CAPADES

I was not able to sleep early last night. In fact, I went to bed at around 3 in the morning. And all because of a pesky mouse. As you all know, the house is still undergoing renovations. So there are areas where it's still a bit messy and open and well, mice could just easily come into the lower rooms or the lower part of the house. I already placed a barrier on the doorway so that the mice won't dash into the room but last night, I saw one scampering about and it really freaked me out. The bed in the boys' room is on the floor (Japanese-style) and I really can't think about that mouse on the boys or me while we were sleeping. So I had to put some flypaper in the areas of the room and prayed that the mouse will get stuck on those at least. Come morning, sure enough, the mouse was stuck fast on the flypaper that was near the door. Can't say I was sorry for the little bugger. I just wanted it out.

.....

I really had a bad dream this morning when I woke up. It bothered me so much I decided to call Ruther. Good thing it was lunchtime and so I didn't have to worry about disturbing him at work. I told him that I just wanted to hear his voice to take away the anxiety I felt about the nightmare. He told me not to think about it anymore and said it wasn't true. I was relieved at his reassurance but I was more relieved that he didn't say "you're nuts" or something to that effect. I just love that guy...

.....

I was not able to do much studying today. And I feel that I have so much to finish. Sigh. Been feeling out of it these past days. But I still have 2 exams to finish before I go on to the next module. So I suppose I have to get on with it soon. Maybe tomorrow... Sigh...

NINOY AQUINO DAY

Today is Ninoy Aquino Day but I understand the holiday was moved to yesterday, Monday (personally I think that's crazy but well, who cares what I think?). Who was Ninoy Aquino? Here's a short one from Wikipedia:

Benigno "Ninoy" Simeón Aquino, Jr. (November 27, 1932 – August 21, 1983) was a Philippine senator and a leading oppositionist to the autocratic rule of Ferdinand Marcos. He was assassinated at the Manila International Airport (now named the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in his honor) upon returning home from exile in the United States. His death catapulted his widow, Corazon Aquino, to the limelight and the presidency, subsequently replacing the 20-year old Marcos regime.
In Aquino's honor, the Manila International Airport where he was assassinated was renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and his image is printed on the 500-peso bill. The Philippine Congress enacted Republic Act (R.A.) 9256, declaring August 21st, the anniversary of his death, as Ninoy Aquino Day, an annual public holiday in the Philippines. Several monuments were built in his honor. Most renowned is the bronze memorial in Makati City near the Philippine Stock Exchange, which today is a venue of endless anti-government rallies and demonstrations.

JAZZ

Really talented jazz musicians. I really enjoyed their performance and could have listened to them all afternoon if we didn't have to go around Minato Mirai that day.

Ruther took this photo (with the train as a background) just outside Sakuragicho station.

THE SUN CAME OUT

At last the clouds parted and the sun shone today. It was lovely. It was still a bit overcast but not that gloomy anymore. I heard in the news that classes will resume tomorrow. Well, it's about time, anyway.

.....

Since the weather was so agreeable today I thought of bringing the boys back to SM. Since I forgot my list last Saturday I was not able to get everything we needed. I asked my sis to come along today since she did not go to work (it's a holiday here but more on that later) and I thought it would be nice to spend time together. She gamely agreed to come. We spent a few minutes at the grocery and armed with my list, I got everything we needed while the boys played in the baby section where a play center was and my sister watched over them. After that, we paid and the boys complained that they were hungry. So off we went to Jollibee. My sis and I shared the palabok while the boys of course, shared the fried chicken (their all-time favorite). Then we went to Watson's to buy my mom's special soap. My sis and I had a good laugh at my mom's vanity and we texted my mom to tease her about it. After that, we went to National Bookstore because I had to get some art supplies for the boys. Shortly after, we headed home.

I really love going out with my siblings. We usually try to go out once every week. I think it also helps that my sis and brother stay over at my aunt's house while I'm here with my in-laws because the houses are adjacent to each other. This way we always see each other a lot. Which is great. My brother is in Cebu at the moment because of work and will probably be back next month or in October and I miss him already. I think it also helps that the three of us were born on the same month so we have similar personalities. Anyway, I hope we'll get to do this more often. I think it's really nice.

PHOTOS OF THE HOUSE

At last here are some photos. Do note that the house is still not completely done yet and there are still a lot of stuff lying around the house (because we have no idea where to put them at the moment) but I think you would appreciate the changes if you see the before and after photos.

THE LIVING ROOM
Before:

The floor was not even cemented yet in this photo...

After:

The floor is done but the walls have yet to be smoothened and painted (which the workers are currently doing now). This is the view from the kitchen. You can see part of the staircase as well.

DINING ROOM/KITCHEN
Before:

Really cramped place.

After:

Walls have yet to be painted and windows and cabinets installed. According to my in-laws, we will be getting a bigger table for the family and we will NOT be using those hideous green chairs.

STAIRCASE
Before:

Looks scary doesn't it?

After:

You can see the bannister and the smoothened steps. However, they have to be tiled yet. You can also see the rounded post which I think will be nice when Christmas comes (I want to put some garlands around it). =D

BALCONY
Before:

This is the door leading to our bedroom. The walls were not painted yet.

After:

The workers just finished tiling this area just the other day. To the left will be sliding doors (to be installed later) leading to and from the balcony.

FRONT OF THE HOUSE
Before:

Still have a lot to do here...

After:

Russell took this photo. The front is not too visible but I guess some of the changes are there.

UPSTAIRS BATHROOM
Love the color. The walls have to be painted and the door as well (it was recycled).

HOUSE UPDATE

The house is looking more and more beautiful everyday. It's still not completely done yet but so far it's taking shape wonderfully. I'm going to take some photos tomorrow so you could see the tiled floor, the painted walls (just the base coat though) of the living room and the tiled bathroom upstairs. My brother-in-law Russell is asking Mama to rush the painting because his wife is coming home in September and he wants the house to look homey for her. Hmmm... he's usually not this panicky so I guess he really wants her to like the house. =D I think it will be wonderful to have everyone under one roof. It will be like a family reunion. It'll be so great! It's just sad that Ruther can't come home then yet... Sigh...

YOKOHAMA SUNSET

Took this photo while Ruther, the boys and I were having a stroll near Ruther's office. It was a lovely, cool afternoon...

Photo taken at Yokohama.

UNEXPECTED

Ruther did something unexpected again.

While we were chatting on Skype tonight, we discussed an ad I saw in the paper about some appliances. It was a 4-page ad about cool deals from an appliance store. Since we previously talked about getting a new tv for our bedroom, I thought that he might be interested to check some of the prices out. (We considered letting the boys have the old tv but of course, their tv viewing will still be monitored.) Anyway, we were already kind of leaning toward the Samsung LCD. Not only is it cool-looking but it is reasonably priced compared to other brands. So, when I saw the ad in the paper and saw some Samsung tvs as part of their deals/discounts, I thought of discussing it more with Ruther and asking him if he really is interested to get one for our room. We had barely begun to talk about it when he cut me off with "Would you rather we put that on hold muna and you come to Japan instead?" Now THAT blew me away. I know how much Ruther loves his gadgets and high-tech stuff. And I know that as a stay-at-home wife and mom, I really feel guilty not giving in to Ruther's desires because he does work hard for those things. But Ruther is not very emotionally-driven like me. I know that going back to Japan would be like pulling a LOT of strings not to mention more budget-tightening but when he suggested that out of the blue, I was just caught off-guard. Of course I want to go back to Japan. I mean, I AM going back there sooner or later (I think it's more like "by hook or by crook") but these past months, I have already been conditioning myself not to hope that I will be going back anytime soon. There's just a lot to think about. But of course, deep in my heart, I miss Japan a lot. I miss it so much I think about it everyday. It's just become such a big part of me I can't get rid of it anymore. I'm not saying that I did not have some difficulty in Japan. Of course I had a hard time adjusting. It's like a whole new world there. But I still loved and love it. And I look forward to going back to that wonderful place.

I still don't know if Ruther said that as a joke or if he was serious. I also don't know if it could still happen. Thinking deeply about it, I am still hesitant. The practical side of me tells me to wait but my emotional side wants to fly away and step on Japan soil once more. I don't know. But who knows what surprises life has in store for me. I can only keep my fingers crossed.

8 WAVES

Photo taken at 8 Waves in Bulacan. Such a fun place. =D

BUCKMINISTER FULLER SAID...

I live on Earth at present, and I don’t know what I am, I know I am not a category. I am not a thing -- a noun. I seem to be a verb, an evolutionary process -- an integral function of the universe.

12:16AM

Some thoughts before I sleep...

I had a lot of fun at the baby shower today. I most especially enjoyed exchanging stories with Ruther's cousins and Tita Nicki (their Aunt from Australia who is married to my mother-in-law's younger brother). It's just a wonderful thing to bond with family and to share experiences and ideas and opinions. I love Ruther's family. Since we were sweethearts, I have always felt welcome and they have all treated me warmly which is why I have no difficulty being so comfortable with everyone. It's just really wonderful spending the day with all these people I call family. I hope we get to do it again soon...

.....

Ruther has still been having some difficulty getting restful sleep. I think it's because he sometimes snores (just the quiet snores) in the evenings. When I'm with him (I'm a light sleeper), I usually roll him gently to his side so he would stop snoring and settle into a deeper sleep. But I suppose now that he's alone he can't know when to roll to his side and so he tells me that sometimes when he wakes in the mornings, he feels like he's still a bit tired. My poor sweetie. I have been doing a lot of research on snoring and stress and all that and hopefully when he comes home he'll be able to sleep better and be more restful in the mornings.

SATURDAY SHOWERS

The day still looks gloomy. I was expecting some sunshine to be peeking from time to time today but no such luck. Still rainy and blustery.

.....

We're off to a baby shower this afternoon. Ruther's cousin (maternal side) is giving birth in October and her sister planned this shower for her. It's a good thing that the event will be in the nearby mall because it would be so inconvenient should it be somewhere else because of the rains. My present is a soft book (it looks like a lunchbox) that has removable pictures so the baby could use it in the bath (they float). Plus, he/she could use it when he is older because it's a book as well. I was so glad I found that because it was such a clever book. Anyway, I hope she'll like it.

SUSHI

Sushi with her apple slices. Isn't she getting FAT? =D

Photo taken last week.
