OLD FAMILIAR FACES

The beauty of Zamboanga is that it's such a small place, you eventually run into people you know sooner or later. Unlike in Manila, I hardly ever meet any of my friends by chance. It usually has to be a planned meeting.

Today, I met the mother and brother of my childhood classmate and friend named Rica at the mall. Rica was my classmate since I was 6 years old. She was our class valedictorian and is now married and stays in Cebu, a city in the Visayas region of the Philippines. We still keep in touch from time to time so it was nice to see her mom again. Like Rica's mom, my mom was also a teacher in the same school so both our moms are friends as well. Well, we chatted for a while and Rica's mom asked me about Japan, Ruther, and how the boys were doing. She said that Rica had high praises for Nikki because he was really smart and very intelligent. I felt really proud of that. Not many people appreciate the effort I put into homeschooling the boys so when it does get noticed, I feel validated.

It really is nice meeting familiar faces unexpectedly. I used to tell my friends that you will know how people regard you by the way they react towards you when caught off-guard. You will know your true friends when they greet you with a smile, a hug or maybe a scream of delight. Most of my friends and I usually do the last one. =D Hopefully, I will get to see more friends in the next few days. It will be truly wonderful to see them again...
