SWEENEY TODD

Just watched Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street starring Johnny Depp (LOVE him!) and now I'm feeling bad!  Not only was the story gory, it had a really sad ending.  And I wasn't expecting that at all!  Drat!   I did love the singing and the first part of the story.  I think Jayne Wisener has a really lovely voice.  Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter weren't too bad either.  Director Tim Burton described it as macabre.  I guess he was right.  It was just an eerie, scary, gory, sad movie.  Not for everyone I suppose but if you appreciate musicals, you just might like this.

We're off to a fun day at my brother-in-law's workplace for a visit.  It's a Kids @ Work thing and the boys are excited.  Well, I'm excited.  I hope the boys have fun with the activities.  I'll be bringing along a helper because I can't very well handle 3 boys on my own, can I?  Well, I can but I'll be stressed to no end.  So I want to NOT be that tomorrow.  Anyway, here's hoping for a very entertaining, fun-filled day!

AVENGERS AND GAME OF THRONES

Ruther and I watched the Avengers a couple of weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. Not only was it riveting, it was entertaining, funny and, in one scene, even sad.  It was a wonderful movie and I'm looking forward to watching the 2nd part.  So, imagine my consternation when I read online that I missed the very very last part of the movie where the superheroes were all together eating shawarma!  Argh!  How could I have missed that?  I'm so mad at myself.  Anyway, once the DVD/Blu-ray is out I'll check that part out.

Game of Thrones is getting more and more interesting.  Season 2 is really great because when I read the book, Season 1 was almost exactly similar.  Season 2 however is interesting.  Some parts in the book were omitted and other parts changed, like Shae being Sansa's handmaiden (instead of Lollys), Osha seducing Theon, and Arya being Lord Tywin's cupbearer.  But I don't mind the changes.  In the book/s, there were so many characters in the story, I sometimes couldn't keep track.  So yeah, am happy with the way HBO did their version.  So excited for the next episode.  I'm hoping it will be another spectacular show.

Winter is coming...

STAYED HOME

This weekend, Ruther and I decided to simply stay home. We'll have a weekend free of expenses for a change. After having the car repaired a few weeks back and paying of the bills, I guess our wallets needed the break. :D

Anyway, Ruther and I spent yesterday and today watching Buzzer Beat, a Japanese drama (jdorama) about a professional basketball player in Japan who meets this aspiring violinist.
The story revolves around their relationship. It was a nice story and watching it made me miss Japan a lot. There are so many things about that country that I wish I could see and experience all over again.

Enzo is so inquisitive! He just wants to see everything, be everywhere and hates to be bored. Which is making his mommy (ME!) exhausted at the end of the day. I don't mind, though. At least the effort of minding him and giving him attention pays off when he giggles and smiles at me. Truly, Enzo has just brought even more sunshine to my family. I just love him to bits!

He loves the outdoors. He enjoys the breeze and loves looking at the swaying mango leaves just beyond our balcony. I think it soothes him. He also loves riding in the car. No surprise there because Nikki and Ethan were the same too. He loves to sit up and funnily, he drools which grosses out his brothers. But he's just growing by leaps and bounds and it scares me so much because in a few more months, he'll no longer be a baby.

Sigh. Wish my baby would stay a baby for a lot longer...

Ruther and I watched Social Network a few nights ago and I must say, Mark Zuckerberg is amazing!! I mean, for him to be able to conceptualize and create Facebook is simply genius! I wouldn't help but feel a deep sense of awe at this person who created something that would connect people from all sorts of lifestyle and ages and make everyone get together in one place. It's just mind-boggling for someone like me who could barely grasp the inner workings of the amazing thing called the internet. Really, I applaud the man. I have to read more on this movie, and maybe read his biography as well, but so far, one amazing human being.

COOKING AND A MOVIE

The other day, Nikki made his own french fries. I only wanted it to be an introduction to peeling and slicing vegetables but he really enjoyed the activity. Of course I was apprehensive because he was actually using a real kitchen knife. I was reminding him like every 5 minutes to be careful and to watch his fingers. I taught him how to peel away from him instead of towards him and he had a bit of difficulty but he managed. Then I taught him how to remove the “eyes”. He loved that! I sliced the potatoes and he julienned them. Of course, I had to fry them because I didn’t want him to be traumatized by the hot oil. He enjoyed his french fries a lot and wanted to make more the next day. But surprisingly, Ethan wanted to make HIS own french fries (I told Nikki that Ethan should have a turn as well). I was about to make dinner when Ethan grabbed a potato and asked for french fries. He actually wanted to be like "Cooking Mama" a game in their Nintendo DS that involves cooking. He got the potato peeler and with my help he peeled away like a hurricane. Potato peelings flew everywhere! I was surprised at his speed (so it was a good thing I was holding on to the potato instead of him) because Nikki was very careful with his peeling process. Anyway, Ethan didn’t have the patience to remove the “eyes” so I did that for him. Like Nikki, I sliced the potatoes initially and let him slice them julienne-style. His fries were a little fatter than Nikki’s but he did have a lot of fun making them. However, I think he enjoyed his peeling and slicing so much he didn’t want to share the fries with Nikki. Nikki was of course irritated at that (he gave Ethan some of his fries the day before) but I managed to convince Ethan to share and he gave his Kuya a bit. Just a wee bit. But at least he shared, right?

Now that I’ve seen how interested they are with slicing vegetables, I’m thinking of other food-related activities for them. Hopefully, the interest stays until they learn how to actually cook a delicious meal by themselves.

Ruther and I watched Journey to the Center of the Earth a few days ago. It was a nice surprise. Although I have to admit that I have yet to read the book (I'm looking forward to that actually), I thought that it was going to be a lot similar to the Hallmark version (I love Hallmark movies!). Anyway, as we continued watching, I realized that it was really different and was a story all its own. It was a really nice family movie and I like Josh Hutcherson (Sean in the movie). I saw him in Zathura and I think he's a cool kid. Anyway, I liked the story and the characters were interesting enough to make me watch the entire thing to the end. Although in truth, I thought that it was a bit short. Well I suppose after watching the Hallmark version I expected more things to happen in the movie but then again, we're talking about millions of dollars here so I'll just leave it at that. I enjoyed the flick, I was transported to a wonderful fantastic (okay scary too) world and it was entertaining. So I'm happy. :)

THE GOLDEN COMPASS

I watched this movie the other day and I really liked it. I don't know why I enjoy movies like this so much; you know, a parallel universe, similar yet different from our own. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, Narnia... all fantastic places that tickle our imagination.

Anyway, I didn't know anything about this movie at all. In fact, I just wanted to watch it because I knew that Nicole Kidman was in it. Okay, I know, flimsy excuse to watch a movie, but hey, I like her and I think she's a great actress. Anyway, I loved the movie a lot. In fact, I liked it so much, I watched it twice. Yup, twice. It was just so interesting and all new and all so creative. I loved the props, the idea of a daemon, the Witches and Ice bears and Gyptians and parallel universes. Really, what's not interesting about that? Anyway, I didn't even realize that there was a book!! So now, I want to read the story more than ever. Of course, when the movie ended I was like, "That's it?!" And then I read that a sequel might be produced later on so I was relieved. Really, I just wanted the movie to go on and on and on...

The movie filled my head so much after I first watched it that I even dreamed of the characters for 2 nights, can you believe that? I can't even remember the last movie that affected me this much! Anyway, I also read that The Golden Compass was not very popular in the US but was a hit in other countries. It's quite amusing becuse I find it really hard to dislike this movie. But then again, I like living in a fastasy world so I guess this movie is made for people like me. =)

ENCHANTED

I watched this movie yesterday and I really really loved it! I told Ruther that I'm so like Giselle when she talks about love. I could really live in a bubble with all the fantastic thoughts I have about it: the wonderment, the romance, the magic, the ups and downs, the singing and dancing, the sparkly eyes, and happily ever after. I also teased Ruther that he's a bit like Robert in the movie. Hahaha!! He denied it of course. =D But I think that Amy Adams as Giselle was perfect. She was really pretty and really made me think she was a storybook princess trapped in the real world. My favorite scene in the movie was when eveybody started to sing "That's How You Know". Yup, definitely my favorite. I even watched that scene again after watching the whole movie. The song just somehow stuck to my head. Anyway, I already told Ruther that we just HAD to have the DVD of this movie. This is one movie I will enjoy watching over and over. =D

JUMPER

I want to the movie yesterday. I know, surprising, right? Well my sister was available to babysit and the movie was only 2 hours long so I figure, it would be nice to watch Jumper. I actually got curious about it when Hayden Christensen appeared in AI with Ryan Seacrest. They showed some of the Jumper moves there and it caught my attention. So yesterday was a "me" day. It was nice actually. I enjoyed the movie. It was different from the usual. Hayden and Rachel Bilson (from The O.C.) were a cute couple. Samuel L. Jackson scared me. He was a really bad guy there. The story/plot was all right. It was cohesive enough but there were some parts where I thought that went too fast and should have been explained more. But that's all I'm complaining about because I enjoyed it. The action scenes were great too. And I loved how the jumpers kept on popping everywhere on the screen. I mean, who would not want to teleport these days? That would me my superpower. Really. So cool. I might just appear on you doorstep one of these days. =D

MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

I finally got to watch Memoirs of a Geisha last night. It was shown on HBO so I thought of taking a break from all my studying and watch it. It was really nice. But then again, I already read the book so I suppose I knew what would happen next, or who the characters were and the roles they played, etc. The movie was quite riveting. I loved the costumes, the cinematography, the props and all that. But I suppose in a way, I'm a bit biased because I love Japan and their rich history. Li Gong as Hatsumomo really amazed me. I liked her acting so much, even more than Michelle Yeoh's who played Mameha (my second favorite character in the book). I didn't like Zhang Ziyi as the lead actress because I thought Nakama Yukie would have made a better Chiyo/Sayuri. Why? Uhm, well, maybe because she's Japanese!? Sigh. I would have loved to see her in the movie. She's so adorable too. Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie. But when it came to explaining things like the kimonos (ownership, putting on one, etc), and geisha training, the book was (of course) more thorough. And I like those kind of explanations. Anyway, I guess I have to go back to studying now because there's nothing good on HBO today...

BEOWULF

Ruther and I watched Beowulf last night. It was a bit disappointing. I didn't like it much. I dunno but it seemed a bit lacking to me. I mean, after becoming king, it fast forwarded how many years later and he was an old king. When the movie ended I was like, "that's it!?" I can't seem to remember my Beowulf lessons from High School. I've been trying to rack my brains but they just won't come. Hmmm... Maybe it really was not interesting at all. Also, I didn't like the look of the movie. I thought that real people would have made it more serious, more dramatic. Somehow it was too Shrek-y for me. Oh well...

I AM LEGEND

I promise, no spoilers.

Ruther and I watched this movie last night. It scared me a lot. Again, I was jumping and yelling like a deranged woman. Of course, I won't and don't do that at the theatres. Scary movies just creep me out. Anyway, it was a nice movie. And by "nice" I mean as a whole and not just the story. I loved how New York changed so much in the movie. It was really bizarre. After watching Sex and the City (loooove and miss that show) and seeing New York so busy all the time, it was so astounding to see the emptiness of the city in the movie. It was actually chilling. I mean, that's like Manila without people! Yikes. Scary.


Will Smith was perfect as Neville. Even the dog was perfect (she was so cute!). Looking back at the movie, I think I would go nuts if I thought I was the last person on Earth. I don't think I would last that long. I'm one who needs companionship. Yes, I'm a needy person, so shoot me. =D Anyway, since I can't very well write much about the movie without spoiling it for those who haven't watched it yet, I'll just say that I liked it despite the scary, spine-tingling, creepy scenes. And Ruther told me that there was an alternative ending to this story. When I found out what it was, I was shocked and blurted out: "Well, why didn't they do it like that?!?" If you want to know what it is, you'll have to check it here. This movie deserves another look-see. Two thumbs up. =D

MOVIES

My brother-in-law Ron and I watched this movie yesterday while Ruther was at work. And it's good thing that he was with me because that movie was scary. It stars John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson and it's really creepy. There were several times when I could not help myself and shrieked my head off which irked Ron a bit. But anyway, I did not force myself to watch the creepy parts. I did not want them to stay in my head and scare me in my sleep. Watching the movie once is enough for a scaredy cat like me. =D

Last night, Ruther and I watched Nancy Drew. I was so disappointed. I mean, I've read almost all of the (classic) Carolyn Keene books and the movie was really not what I expected. I feel so bad just thinking about it. Maybe I already had these expectations in my head based on years of knowing the character in the book and when I saw this teeny bopper playing the role of Nancy Drew and the movie so obviously different from the mysteries that I've read and loved, it just baffled and disapppointed me tremendously. I don't even want to write about the movie. It's just not what I expected at all. Ruther kind of found my frustration funny and told me that the movie was "loosely based" on the books. But that doesn't make me feel better still...

COOL MORNINGS

I love the mornings. I think they are wonderfully cool. It really brings me back to the time when I had to wake up early to go to school and the mornings were absolutely chilly. I think it's nice to cuddle under a light blanket. It's really quite comfortably cool; not too much like the wintry mornings in Japan (although I do miss those still) and not as warm as a couple of years ago when it was already December and yet, it felt like we were in the middle of summer. Yeah, do love the mornings, these days...

I watched Resident Evil: Extinction the other day. I guess it was all right. It's not as dark as the first 2 films and Alice's character has evolved a lot it's genetically astounding. I don't know how people can some up with these things. Those undead/zombies/corpses still creep me out though even if they were out in the sun. Still scary creatures. Loved the bird attack. Reminded me a lot of the 1963 movie The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock. Creepy. I guess I love this movie because of Milla Jovovich. Love her, love her, love her. Oded Fehr playing Carlos Olivera was all right but I think he had less exposure this time. And he died so that was a bummer. Ali Larter playing Claire Redfield was also okay. Good choice. I just didn't like Milla's hairstyle in this movie. It was weird. Nice twist in the end. Yeah, it was okay. I just wish I didn't have to think about those zombies so much.

BOURNE ULTIMATUM

I watched this movie the other night and it was cool. I never really liked Matt Damon before the Bourne movies. He was like, okay with me as an actor but after watching Bourne Identity, he was woah! Pretty cool. Not Jet Li cool though, but cool enough. =D Anyway, I loved the flick and maybe because I already loved the first 2 movies. I just found the plot riveting and exciting and full of suspense. The action scenes were great too and I could only imagine Ruther's annoyance at me while I went "Get him! Get the guy!" or "Just kill him already!" Yes, I can become quite involved with the stories while I'm watching the action (of course, I don't do this in the movie theatres for fear of being booted out)... =D Anyway, I think this will make it to out DVD collection and of course, the rest of the Bourne movies as well...

RATATOUILLE

I watched this movie the other day and I must say, I enjoyed it tremendously! I have always loved watching cooking-themed shows and movies and this one was no exception. It was funny and interesting and I loved the animation. The voice talents were also great and added a lot of character to the little critters in the movie. I just loved everything about the movie. As always, Pixar is there to bring families together through their movies. And I think Brad Bird rocks!! Am going to watch this movie again and I WILL definitely have this in the boys' DVD collection. =D

MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING

I watched My Best Friend's Wedding on HBO again today. I really love this movie. Which is really strange because I really love happy endings and this does not have a happy ending. I suppose Julia's character as well as Dermot's were just so perfect. Not to mention Cameron's bubbly character and Rupert's antics. I suppose the movie just had the right ingredients to make this movie so enjoyable. Of course, for the nth time, I cried again in the end. It's just so so sad. But at least it was hopeful. =D

MR. AND MRS. SMITH

I watched this movie again on HBO recently and I really enjoy watching it. I don't care what other people say about it, that it's not great, that it's a bad movie, etc. I love the on-screen sizzle of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Plus, I think that the writer did a great job with the story. Sooo cute! I love how they incorporated real life to a movie. I mean, it IS true that some marriages lose their oomph after some years but in the movie, Jane and John Smith found a (painful) way to bring back the romance. The action scenes were great and Angelina and Brad were really suited for each other. I also really loved how Angelina can look so professional in a turtleneck and skirt and then look so hot in combat boots. Not many women can pull that off. Anyway, I think I would love to have this in our DVD collection. =D

MUSIC AND LYRICS

I finally got to watch Music and Lyrics yesterday. It was such a cute story although I couldn't help but feel that Hugh Grant is getting on in years (don't get mad at me, Jane, I know you love him =D). Anyway, I enjoyed watching the movie. Hugh's gyrations and hip movements there were hilarious, not to mention Cora Corman's (played by Haley Bennet) eccentricity and not-so-innocent dance moves. I think this girl should be given more movie roles. She is such a breath of fresh air and her acting was simple and exact.

Anyway, Drew Barrymore has always been one of my favorite actresses (loved her in E.T. and Firestarter because she was soooo cute!), and I think romantic comedies suit her very well. But I still loved her with Adam Sandler in 50 First Dates. They are so great together. Kinda reminds me of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Anyway, I really did enjoy watching this flick yesterday. It was nice being curled up in bed with a blanket, enjoying the cold weather and sipping a cup of coffee while I'm transported to the world of movies. Not bad, aye?

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

WARNING!! If you haven't watched this movie and plan to do so, then stop reading now.

Yesterday, I finally got the chance to watch Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I wanted to watch the first show but I unfortunately arrived a few minutes late. No worries though, I still went in with the plan of watching the first part later on. I figured I won't miss much during the first few minutes of the movie.

Anyway, I enjoyed this latest flick although the book was definitely much more satisfying. I have several comments though. Firstly, Dolores Umbridge (played by Imelda Staunton) was really not what I pictured her to be. I expected someone I would hate/detest/revile the moment I saw her but Imelda did not evoke these feelings in me, unlike the character in the book. I still think that Imelda's acting was great but it's just that it was not suitable for Dolores' character. Natalia Tena was also not the character I imagined Nymphadora Tonks to be. I was thinking more of an Avril kind of stature but with Meg Ryan hair (that's hot pink of course). So yeah, that was a bit disappointing for me. Anyway, Evanna Lynch playing Luna Lovegood was one of the reasons I liked the movie. I think she's pretty and her voice is just so sweet. Another thing about the movie was Dumbledore. I really really miss Richard Harris who played Dumbledore in the first 2 installments of this movie. Michael Gambon was just not good enough for me. I miss the dignified way Richard Harris would move and speak in his deep widard-y voice and his tall stature made the role so right for him. When I read the book, it is always Richard Harris in my mind's eye as Dumbledore. Sigh. And what's up with making Cho Chang the snitch? I was really bummed about that. And "the kiss". Well it was okay. Nothing really spectacular but then again, I suppose I should be thankful for that. And Helena Bonham Carter playing Bellatrix Lestrange was WOW! She really is a great actress (still remember FightClub). Am looking forward to seeing her in the next installment.

All in all, I guess it's a nice movie. If you can separate the book from it then you would really enjoy it. I suppose that's the most one can do to enjoy watching the movie without thinking about the other scenes in the book that were omitted. Oh well.

SPIDERMAN 3

I watched this movie last night. It was all right but somehow, I did not like it as much as the other Spiderman movies. I just felt that something was missing. Don't ask me what, I don't know what it is. I just felt it. Anyway, it was pretty all right. I suppose you can only do so much in a movie with 3 villains and one superhero plus a love story right smack in the middle of it. And also, how many times will Mary Jane be a victim just because of Spiderman? Poor, poor girl.

I suppose the constant in Peter Parker's life will be poverty. He never seems able to get out of it. I was a bit disappointed when Harry Osborne dies at the end of the movie. I always feel bad when good people die. Kudos to Topher Grace for excellent acting. I could never separate his That 70's character in my head but after I watched this he was really great. =D

And now the villains. Hmmm.. I really can't say much about the Sandman. I did read his fictional biography and it's strange that there was no mention of a daughter there. I suppose the best thing he said in the movie for me was: "I'm not a bad person. I've just had bad luck." It was a really sad thing to say. And I suppose that's true in real life as well. Poor guy. As for the Venom, I also read the fictional biography. It seems that he is both Eddie Brock AND a black alien creature meshed into one. Weird. The one thing I don't like is that Venom throws web-like thingies too. He supposedly got that from being previously attached to Spiderman. Bummer. Anyway, that church bell scene apparently happened in the comics and also that scene where Eddie Brock went to church. My only question is, what will happen to the Sandman and will Spiderman have another movie?

Oh well, I suppose there's nothing we can do but wait.

FANTASTIC 4: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER

I know, I know. You don't have to tell me that this movie came out ages ago. I just had the chance to watch it this afternoon and I must say, I really enjoyed it. It was light and nicely done. The story was fun but at the same time, it gave the characters equal exposure. I was happy that Ben Grimm found someone to love because in the first part, it was kind of depressing when his wife left him. Also, at last, a mature Johnny emerged from the egocentricity and rebelliousness. Of course, I am not qualified to review this movie because I'm not a comic book fan nor am I a movie critic, but all I can say is that it was a fun movie to watch and it was highly entertaining. Jessica Alba looked really pretty in the movie and I loved the way she acted there. Very smooth and mature. And can I just say that Chris Evans was so HOT in the movie? Really sizzzzzzling.... =D

It was kind of weird having to consider something so big swallowing the earth up. Weird and disturbing. Anyway, that scene reminded me of the animated Transformers movie when planets were also consumed by a bigger planet (?). I forgot the name. Maybe Ruther can refresh my memory, being a REAL transformers fan. =D

Anyway, I was glad to watch this movie, if only to have an enjoyable and pleasant afternoon.
